Don't get me wrong, free email services are great. But when it's time to get down to business, these services should be avoided like the plague. Why, you may ask? Simply put, a free email address is probably the least professional thing you can do for your business. Most if not all websites come with the ability to create custom email addresses that end with your domain name. This is the easiest way to make a good first impression without spending a dime. If you already have a website, why not benefit from the email your web host provides?
As an example, pretend you are in need of an attorney. You find one who looks smart, professional, and like they would handle your case with attention to time and detail. Great! So you click on their contact page to get their email address and you find, at the bottom of the page, "please email email@example.com" to setup a consultation. Ouch! 8 years of ivy league school and passing the bar exem goes right down the drain. All of the professional weight that comes with being an attorney is lost due to using a free email service. Wouldn't "firstname.lastname@example.org" look so much better? Personally, I would leave that page and keep looking in this instance, as would most internet consumers these days.
This is, of course, a completely ficticous example, but it illustrates the point precisely. Using free email services for business can only hurt your level of professionalism. If you are looking to turn internet traffic into paying customers, one of the most important things you can do for yourself is take the time to setup the email that your web host provides. If doing so is beyond your skill level, don't worry. There are plenty of people out there (including us!) who would love to help you for a very reasonable cost.
